About to become ‘Rich & Famous’ but they have to make decisions first.
PADRES…Michael King has earned his free agent stripes….What he has done the last two years to make himself an ace of the San Diego staff is about to bring him wealth…A bit of a bold move to opt out of the (2Y-56M) he could have had with the Friars-to see if if there is a 3-to-5 year deal that might pay him (30M) per year….
Adrian Morejon’s decision is really complex…Take the 1-year (23M) Qualifying offer, have another good season and know next year that would be the starting point for free agent dollars, or go somewhere else-start over with new people and see if you can get a (5Y-80M) deal that would average (16M) a season over the full term.
The intangible for King and Morejon, you are leaving people (Ruben Niebla) who played a key role in developing you into a very successful role with the Friars.
Ty France-established first baseman or career journeyman…Obviously a chance to get one last payday, well above and beyond the minor league contract he signed last year, that led to a career year…He’s bounced around-Mariners-Twins-Blue Jays, came home, found a really good fit….Does he stay here on a short term deal (5M) plus bonus clauses..or try to go outside again and seek a projected (2Y-30M) deal with a new team?
Clock ticking on both this team here and those guys there. New opportunities, yes, but a great unknown, definitely yes, if you exit the team and the people (AJ Preller) who helped make you better?
Stay tuned..decisions coming quickly.
