Hard to believe this Padres team has this type of record (31-22).
They seem to be taking on water and still trying to keep their heads above water.
They have pathed the pitching staff as much as they can with all these rentals, from Walker Buehler to Griff Canning, and now the addition of Lucas Giolito.
It’s almost as if the Padres are living start to start with moire than two-thirds of the rotation coming off surgeries and unemployment.
The staggering story is the batting order, or the lack of production in that batting order, or the money paid to stars, who are not producing compared to what they are earning.
The scorecard reads:
Tatis…0-home runs in 53-games, though he his hitting better now (.252), but he’s one of the few.
Merrill…A really bad stretch over the last 4-weeks, a (.178) average.
Laurano…A strong start now washed away by a bad 4-weeks skid (.136).
Castellanos..A home run threat, sure, but stuck in a (.171) hole in the past month.
Cronenworth…Hurt with a concussion, but before that a (.144) average-the pits
Machado..he the highest earner, in denial about this horrid slump, but these numbers do not lie. He is on an (8-81) skid, that’s an (.098) batting average, and his season record is (.170). And all he says ‘I’m working on it’.
Amazing, all this for a (224M) payroll.
The Padres, no hits, and no answers to this month long malaise.
