There are two tiers of conversations as the Padres head to the trade deadline next Monday.

Who can they trade for?

Who are they willing to give up?

Here’s a look at the Padres ‘Hot List’ of pitchers they are looking at:

EMERSON HANCOCK..Seattle righthander has gone to the top of the list (3.16) but the price might be Adrian Morejon…Expendable because the Mariners have 3-other pitchers ready to come to the major leagues.

KEVIN GAUSMAN..Blue Jays veteran having a tough year (4-10) on a bad team, but reliable and would be a short term rental. 

HUNTER GREENE…The former Reds ace has fought thru a tough siege of injuries (7.70) and has a couple of years left on his contract..Still alot left in his career if they can get him to stay healthy.

JOSE SORIANO…Angels power arm-but will be a costly addition of multiple players and not so sure the Halos want to move him…Some strong numbers (9-6)-3.29.

REID DETMERS..Bounce back Angels season, probably at a more affordable price, and a back end rotation guy…(3-7)..4.05

CARLOS LA GRANGE…One of many young Yankees they have scouted but that would have to be part of a bigger transaction, Mason Miller, Xander Bogaerts or an outfielder…New York is really battered right now.

ROBBIE RAY…Giants veteran lefthander having good year on bad team (9-6)..3.16..but what are you giving up to a division rival.

SETH LUGO..Royals-ex Padres but has two years left on pricey deal-a battler (4.36)

MICHAEL WACHA…Same as Lugo, pitching well in a bad situation (3.60)

BRADY SINGER…Back of the rotation guy with the Reds (4.53) but not outstanding

LUIS CASTILLO…Once an ace..huge contract..Mariners would have to pay some of the money (3-9) 5.05..but how much gas does he have left?

KYLE FREELAND…Injuries have wrecked the Rockies lefthander (2-10) 7.34

FREDDY PERALTA…Mets will move him in final months of contract-but what do you get (5-9)..4.89

KODAI SENGA..Once a cornerstone with Mets, a terrible injury run (0-7)..8.05

FOSTER GRIFFIN…A late bloomer in Washington, and price would be hefty (12-2)..2.76

Keep in mind, half the world is looking for starting pitching.

Keep in mind too, the Padres have the 30th ranked farm system-little to trade.

Keep in mind, with new ownership yet to take over, taking on more salary is an issue

I would not trade Mason Miller.

I would only trade Adrian Morejon for the right ‘young starting pitcher’

I might move Bradgley Rodriguez-Jeremiah Estrada-or Wandy Peralta

I would shop one of my catchers, possibly Luis Campusano, for the right pitcher

I would keep Ty France-Gavin Sheets.

Something has to happen between now and Monday 3pm, just beyond the hope Nick Pivetta and Joe Musgrove can pitch by Labor Day weekend on more than a Wing and a Prayer.

But the Padres are like everyone else in the National League (Help Wanted Arms)…seven teams fighting for 2-wildcard spots, separated by just 3-games in the standings.

The next deal has to be the right deal for so many different reasons.
