“AZTECS COACH–DEFENDS QB-PROGRAM..BIG HOLE TO CLIMB OUT OF”

by | Sep 22, 2026 |

Only one way to go and that is up.

Easier said and done with San Diego State football.

If the game with James Madison was a ‘statement game’, playing someone you were equal to, the Aztecs failed the test.

The record is (1-2).  The fan support is minimal.  The quarterback debate will not go away.  The coaching defiance is off the charts.

Sean Lewis, it’s his team, his roster, his playcalling, his quarterback problem.

Up next at Toledo, then Texas State, and at Oregon State, all who have hi-powered offenses, something right now SDSU does not have.  It’s betrayed its running game and an improving defense.  Lots of games left in what will become a tougher schedule.

Coach Sean Lewis-Monday Press Conference:

========

Really good effort by JMU-played hard.

We played hard in segments.

Really good moments for us.

Occasionally good but not consistent

Toledo-really explosive offensively

Came back 49-48 to win in overtime against Temple

Find a way to win

Played Michigan State hard

Built roster with transfers from Mercer

Toledo has home run threats all over the yard in all phases

They can touch the paint with every play

Opportunity comes quick with early game with 9am start

JMU not a stage better than us-we missed opportunities

We gave the game to them

Ownership and future of season in the boys hands

Javian Kennard-created dirty yards-not let one man get him down to the ground

He shows up everyday with energy-he knows program he joined

His opportunity showed up-he was trained and ready

His heart-unique background-tough as nails-resilient

He has courage to take on life..he takes on life-maturity-

He has ownership to what he does

Finds a way to make plays right

Our defense..the 35 minutes vs UCLA and the 2nd half vs JMU-showed what we could be

Find our best on defense and make it right for every game

Fixing the offense-is alot of little things-we need to get each to handle their job

We need to start better on offense-we need to execute

Make the right block, beat the coverage, the QB has to make the decision.

QB-Jayden Denegal-makes good throws but has not done it consistently

His fundamentals are a bit loose-we work on cleaning it up

Learn alot more from the hardship of football than the sunny warm days

I know what I signed up-I embrace-I know this will not be a walk in Central Park

Lucky Sutton has to get healthy-so Javion will probably start

The process is what gives you the final score-we have to improve this process Mon-thru-Fri

Social media-we need to block it out-self discipline

Our kids are internet natives

I don’t know if it helps or hurt

I am off social media when camp opens

I tell my players edit your life-know your true north.

Don’t base your self worth tied to someone else’s comments

Be mentally tough-detatch from it

It’s not healthy so not pay attention to it

Boys make a choice

Fans are passionate and fanatical…Society wants to go to extremes.
